Hanging Banners with Suction Cups

Easily install vinyl banners on windows and glass
Often times you may find yourself needing to hang a vinyl banner on a window, glass, or other smooth gloss-finished surface that leaves you few hanging options that won’t damage the surface. In these situations, consider hanging your banner with suction cups. Easy to use and readily available, suction cups provide a quick way to install small-to-medium lightweight banners in most indoor settings on glass, windows, mirrors, and gloss-paint surfaces. The nature of suction cups makes them easy to reposition and remove, and provide a great temporary way to hang your banner without damaging the host surface.

Suction cups will stick to most hard glossy surfaces

Suction cups are the perfect solution for hanging banners indoors in retail and office settings. Typical suction cups will naturally stick to many hard gloss surfaces, and work especially well for window banners. They can also be used to hang banners over mirrors, glass parts, and furniture.

Types of suction cups that work best for banner installation

When you’re hanging a vinyl banner with suction cups, make sure to use the largest size cups you can find. Usually plain basic two-inch clear cups work best, and provide plenty of strength to hold small-to-medium lightweight banners. We tested and recommend these suction cups from the Home Depot. Avoid using suction cups with plastic or unnecessary thick hooks as they may not fit through the banner grommets, or may break off with time.

Hanging Process

For best results, you need a banner reinforced with grommets. The vinyl material stretches and wrinkles under tension, and an un-grommeted banner will get wrinkled if installed with suction cup hooks. Usually, the minimum number of grommets you need is four – one on each corner. If your banner is long and narrow, you may need additional grommets across the top to help prevent sagging. Metal suction cup hooks fit perfectly through the standard #2 (3/4-inch diameter, 1/4 inch hole) grommets we use at Printastic.

Lastly, to help prevent banners from sagging or curling over time, we recommend having the banner hemmed on all four sides to reinforce its structural stability and help it to lay flat.

Banners that work best with suction cups

The main concern when installing banners with temporary suction cups is to make sure it won't fall off and is not too big or too heavy. Typically, we would recommend our lightweight 10oz Indoor Banners or Mesh Banners, hemmed on all four sides with grommets on every corner. Recommended banner sizes are anywhere from 2x4 or 2x6 all the way up to 4x6. Vertical banners and square 4x4 banners look great on windows.
